On the outside, life looks perfect. On the inside, alcohol is stealing everything.

Three Gripping Alcohol Recovery Stories: an executive hiding behind success, a wine mom at rock bottom, and a daughter's vow. Raw, honest recovery stories.

Different from traditional self-help books or self-help guides, this memoir-style story series shows the human side of alcoholism. The secrecy, the shame, and the fight to reclaim a life worth living. It offers hope, courage, and the reminder that recovery is always possible.

You won't just learn what it looks like. You'll feel it.

Each book stands alone and can be read in any order.

  • The Double Life of a High-Functioning Alcoholic: Dave is the executive who seems to have it all until blackouts and secrets force him to face the truth.
  • From Wine Mommy to Sober Mommy: Emily is the devoted mom hiding her drinking until the police knock on her door and she must fight for her children and herself.
  • Never Like My Father: Olivia is the girl who promised never to drink like her father until her brother's death shatters everything and she becomes exactly what she swore she'd never be.

These aren't just stories of rock bottom. They are stories of redemption, strength, and building a better life. If you've ever asked, "Is my drinking really a problem?" this series holds the answer.

something I never experienced

I had no idea how hard it is to stop drinking. I cannot drink as it makes me sick. I wonder why we allow alcohol to dominate our society. It is weakness.

inspiring

I am in recovery myself, this was a breath of fresh air. To know you are not perfect, mistakes will happen. As long as you get back up, life will continue on safely again. Great read and proud of you. Cheers to sobriety.

Fantastic book

A fantastic and accurate account of what some call a high-functioning alcoholic - although once sober usually learn that was not the case. Perfect descriptions of the path that leads to the ultimate decision to quit, the early days and how lives can be transformed into truly living. Sobriety has been the greatest decision of my life and I love to hear from others who have found the joys of sobriety.

Not a memoir- a how to sober up manual

Not a bad book by any means, I was just looking for non-fictional account of a sobriety journey. This is kind of a 12 step story and it’s fictional. His wife and family are way too supportive and insightful to be real… but there may be some redeeming value in the overall story of the process.

I was all in

Love the writing and the heartfelt story of the difficult but rewarding road to recovery. Related so much with my own journey to sobriety. I highlighted allot in the book! Will recommend.

The double life of high functioning alcoholic

I'm at the mid way point of this book and to it very relatable and real. I've learned a lot in 109 pages.

a must read!!

From the very first page, this book grabbed my attention with how real and unfiltered it felt. Emily’s journey is devastating at times, but also incredibly motivating—it really shows how alcohol can quietly unravel even a life that looks perfect from the outside. I admired that the author didn’t gloss over the hard parts, like the legal battles, family struggles, and tough decisions that come with addiction. By the end, I walked away feeling both hopeful and deeply respectful of the strength it takes to choose sobriety and start over.

Honest, Uplifting, and Deeply Relatable

From Wine Mom to Sober Mom is a powerful and honest account of one woman’s journey from casual drinking to sobriety. It speaks directly to the struggles many women face with alcohol, especially in today’s “wine culture.

A raw and heartfelt journey through addiction and recovery

This memoir pulls you straight into the emotional reality of alcoholism, family strain, and the fight to rebuild a life. The author shares her story with honesty and vulnerability, letting you feel the fear, hope, and determination behind every step toward sobriety. A powerful read that shows the strength it takes to choose healing and the possibility of redemption for anyone struggling with alcohol.

Honest, open, painful and uplifting

I chose this book to help me better understand the struggles my alcoholic daughter is experiencing as she tries to break an alcoholic stranglehold. I, as well, needed to break free from my misconceptions, frustrations and judgment. The depth and breadth of this book has stunned me, honestly. The perspectives shared, the tools, the emphasis on what can be built and freed up really opened my eyes. I can use these tools personally for my own emotional struggles, as well as being a better support for my daughter. What a gift.Thank you, Howard Kane.

Engaging book but quite contrived

The basic plot was fine. All the feelings the main character describes regarding the drinking and its ramifications were true. However, the actual plot and characters in the book feel really fabricated.Main character seems to be married to a unicorn who has a medical background which allows her to understand alcoholism on the level of an addiction counselor but that “isn’t her field”. She stays out of his way and barely comments when he has his incidents while drinking, then knows his sobriety down to the day when he’s recovering, all while spouting very in depth knowledge of every stage he's in. The perfect balance, which none of the rest of us will ever come close to.His son has one incident in his youth when he gets drunk and his father has a “hard conversation” with him…and nothing ever happens again. Another unicorn. The best one, though, is the job. Guy works as a corporate data analyst. His company decides to move him over to position of…addiction counselor? When he has no degree in even basic social work? And pay him the same amount he was making as a corporate exec? Anyone who works or has ever worked for a corporation knows how likely that is.The book was engaging and easy to read, and had a clear message. All good. But the reality is…there’s no reality here.

If you know, you know.

This book describes so many of the reasons I stopped drinking. It’s reaffirming the decision I made over a year ago, and it is still comforting and supportive to know I am not alone.

Doesn't quite ring true

This is an easy, short read but I wasn't quite convinced by it. It is described as a `memoir style fiction' but is ostensibly based on a true account. The protagonist, Dave, has a wife and child who speak in a very odd style, always knowing the exact right thing to say. At one point we are told that he is hiding his addiction by drinking half coffee, half bourbon in his mug whilst he's watching his son's sports team but any drinker knows that whisky smells really strongly and it would be really noticeable if you were drinking it in the morning. Vodka is the problem drinker's daytime choice!

Awesome book about alcoholism and recovery

I really liked the honesty in which he shared the nity gritty of his journey from active alcoholism to active recovery and how it blossoms into service. Very helpful read in my recovery journey! 🙏

Great read!

This book really stayed with me. The Double Life of a High-Functioning Alcoholic captures something most people don’t talk about - the quiet, hidden kind of struggle that happens behind a polished life. The honesty here is powerful; it doesn’t dramatize addiction but shows how it slowly takes over, one “I’m fine” at a time. What I loved most is how hopeful it feels. It doesn’t shame or preach - it reminds you that recovery doesn’t have to wait for rock bottom. The writing is heartfelt, easy to connect with, and filled with those little moments that make you nod and think, “Yeah, I’ve been there.” A must-read for anyone questioning their relationship with alcohol or trying to understand someone who is.

Moving story.

A very moving story. It offers deep insight into alcoholism and what it’s like to live with it and to keep functioning despite it. Told in an honest and often unsettling way, the book draws the reader in and truly makes you think. It touched me deeply, and I sincerely hope this story will help many others.

Mediocre at best.

This book in a nutshell: It is a story about an alcoholic who quit drinking, then didn't, then did. And life happened. And he wanted to drink but didn't. The end.It didn't seem like a cautionary tale as much as it was a way to solicit a "pat on the back for not doing something I said I didn't want to do."I could never tell if the story was fact or fiction. And to me it doesn't matter, because you cannot tell me it takes "courage" to not do something.

Sobering Story

Like many, I enjoy a drink; it's rare that a week goes by without one. This book is a well-written example of how drinking can spiral out of control even very easily. The author tells us how he got to the terrifying state of being a high-functioning alcoholic and then how he turned it around, his relapses and as of now, his success in not drinking. I can see how easy it would be to get in the author's position and while I'm not giving the demon drink up, I will be carefully watching for any signs it is getting out of control.

A Journey from addiction to Hope......

It takes so much courage and sacrifice in itself to recover from alcohol addiction. And in that aspect this book throws some light by giving an honest and powerful look into the hidden life of a high-functioning alcoholic. An eye-opening book as it provides hope and strength to rebuild one's life..

Drink less, play more

I guess, the author had the right motivation to write this book. Helping others to do it by explaining his story is a good strat. Good read.

Impactful story

This is an impactful story about overcoming alcoholism—the denial, relapses and the journey of addition to recovery. Written like a memoir with psychological insights of what is feels like to be an addict, dealing with cravings years after sobriety.
